BERTA DISTTILLERY, MOMBARUZZO
Casalotto near Mombaruzzo, a small hill village near Asti, is famous not only for its "amaretti" macaroons but also for its excellent wines. This is the home of Distillerie Berta, world famous for its grappa spirits and a leader in the Italian industry.
The Berta family has been making grappa for four generations and it is the perfect example of an Italian business that has combined the use of the most modern technologies with all the wisdom of the rural tradition.
To ensure an exquisite product, quality has been a key priority of the company ever since its foundation in 1947 by Paolo Berta.
Aware that a genuine flavour alone would not be enough for true success, he also began to pay more attention to presentation, distributing his grappas in special bottles made from unusual materials such as pottery and crystal. And this strategy paid off. Nowadays, Berta grappa is exported to more than sixty countries worldwide.
The finest aquavit produced by the distillation phase is aged in oak casks which enhance its distinctive sensory characteristics, and it is then bottled after an appropriate period of time.

BECCARIS DISTILLERY, BOGLIETTO DI COSTIGLIOLE D'ASTI
Distilleria Beccaris was founded almost by chance, because in 1951 its founder Elio Beccaris had decided to set up in business, but was unsure whether he should build a distillery, a winery or a vinegar production plant, so he asked his son Carlo, then just a few months old, to make the choice. He put three pieces of paper with the possible options in a hat and asked the little boy to pull out one of them, swearing to abide by his decision.
So Carlo Beccaris can quite rightly claim the merit for the rare, fundamental features of a highly respected company, including craftsmanship and passion, which create outstanding quality.
The distillery is best known, without a doubt, for its Moscato grappa, its best-seller, which is aged for at least three years.
As well as this "Riserva" quality, it also makes the "Stravecchia", offered for sale after ageing for 10 years in Slavonian oak casts, and produced from a fine blend of Nebbiolo, Moscato and Barbera aquavits. Moscato grappa is now also offered for sale in the two splendid "Vis Aurea" and "Stilla di Sole" bottles, aged for ten years.
The philosophy of Distilleria Beccaris is simple: to use the right things to make a good grappa, and the right things are provided by Mother Nature, in the form of pomace. This is where skill and experience come into play. These qualities, combined with human sensitivity, are the secret of the success of people from different generations, who have all shared the same passion.
